At Willow, our interior design and architecture studio in Costa Rica, we believe that every space has the potential to tell a story. And sometimes, that story already exists, waiting to be rediscovered. It’s not always about starting from scratch, but about looking with new eyes at what is already a part of our lives. This was the case with Ileana’s project, a client who came to us with a very special piece: a coffee table inherited from her grandmother, full of family memories and sentimental value.
The Value of Emotion in Design
When Ileana presented us with the table, she did so with some doubt. She wasn’t sure if she wanted to incorporate it into the design of her new living room. It was worn out, out of style, and didn’t quite fit with the modern vision she had for her home. But there was something she couldn’t ignore: the emotional significance of that piece was enormous. It had witnessed generations, intimate conversations, and everyday moments that, over time, had turned into precious memories.
At Willow, we understand that design is not just about aesthetics. It’s also a way to honor the past, connect with our roots, and create spaces that reflect who we are. That’s why we proposed something different: restoring the table and making it the heart of the new design.
The Transformation Process
The first step was to assess the condition of the table. The wood had scratches, deep stains, and a layer of varnish that was deteriorated. Despite that, its structure was firm, and the artisanal details on the legs spoke of an era when each piece was made with dedication and craftsmanship.
We worked with local artisans specialized in restoration, who understood the emotional value of the piece. They carefully sanded the surface, treated the wood with natural products, and applied a vintage finish that respected the original essence, while making it more contemporary and in line with the new concept of the space.
During the process, the marks of time that did not affect functionality were preserved. On the contrary, those imperfections added character and authenticity. The restoration aimed not to erase the history, but to enhance it.
Integration into the Interior Design

Ileana’s new living room was designed with a palette of warm colors, organic textiles, and natural elements that reflect the conscious and welcoming style we promote at Willow. The restored table became the focal point of the space, surrounded by contemporary furniture that contrasted and complemented its classic aesthetic.
The result was an elegant, harmonious, and deeply personal environment. The table not only served a practical function, but also evoked memories, sparked conversation, and added an emotional dimension to the design. It was a piece that spoke, that connected, that gave meaning to the space.
Reflection from Willow
This project represents what we deeply value at Willow: design with purpose. In Costa Rica, where the connection to family, land, and tradition is so strong, restoring an inherited piece is more than an aesthetic decision; it’s an act of respect, continuity, and sustainability.
We believe that interior design doesn’t always have to start from scratch. Sometimes, the most valuable pieces are already in our lives, waiting to be rediscovered and adapted to new contexts. Restoring is a way to care for the planet, honor the past, and create spaces with soul.
Furthermore, these types of decisions contribute to a circular economy, support local artisan work, and reduce unnecessary consumption. At Willow, each project is an opportunity to demonstrate that design can be conscious, emotional, and transformative.
And you? Do you have a special piece that you’d like to integrate into your home?
Perhaps it’s an antique chair, a lamp that belonged to your parents, or a table like Ileana’s. At Willow, we help you rescue its essence, give it new life, and integrate it into a design that reflects your story.
Designing with sensitivity is designing with respect. It’s understanding that objects also have memory, that spaces can heal, and that design can be a tool to reconnect with what truly matters.
