A Wooden Rocking Horse with History: Emotional and Artisanal Design at Willow

In the world of interior design, there are moments when objects transcend their decorative function to become symbols of memory, affection, and continuity. At Willow, our design studio in Costa Rica, we had the privilege of participating in one of those moments: the creation of a wooden rocking horse for a baby’s bedroom, inspired by a toy the father had during his childhood.

This project not only allowed us to explore emotional design, but also reaffirmed our commitment to sustainability, local craftsmanship, and the connection between generations.

The origin of an idea filled with nostalgia

It all began with an intimate conversation between our Willow team and a client who was preparing the nursery for his first child. In the middle of decisions about color palettes, furniture layout, and textile selection, a special request came up: he wanted to include a wooden rocking horse that represented the one he had as a child, but with a transitional style.

The image he shared with us was an old, slightly faded photograph, yet full of meaning. It showed a simple rocking horse, with soft lines, curved rockers, and a sturdy structure. It wasn’t a luxurious object, but it was deeply symbolic. For him, it represented moments of play, safety, and affection. And now he wanted his son to experience something similar.

Emotional design: when memories become objects

At Willow, we believe that interior design should be more than functional or aesthetic. It should be emotionally sustainable—that is, capable of creating lasting connections between people and the spaces they inhabit. That’s why we embraced the challenge with enthusiasm and respect.

The first step was to study the original image and translate it into a contemporary design that preserved the essence of the rocking horse while also meeting today’s child safety standards. We focused on:

  • The shape: we preserved the soft curves and proportions of the original.
  • The structure: we reinforced the base for greater stability.
  • The materials: we selected certified Costa Rican wood, durable and non-toxic.
  • The finish: we opted for a natural matte varnish that protected the wood without hiding its texture.

Local craftsmanship and sustainability

One of Willow’s pillars is working with local artisans who value tradition and quality. For this project, we collaborated with a woodworker from the Central Valley of Costa Rica. His expertise was key to achieving an authentic and safe result.

The wood used came from sustainable sources, and the entire manufacturing process was done by hand, with attention to every detail. From cutting the pieces to final assembly, each step was carried out with precision and care.

This approach not only ensures a long-lasting product but also reduces the project’s environmental footprint by avoiding industrial processes and unnecessary transportation.

Integration into the nursery design

The rocking horse was conceived as a centerpiece within the design of the child’s room. The space, decorated with a palette of soft greens and natural elements, included a hand-painted mural of trees, a wooden crib that had belonged to the baby’s older sister, and cushions made from shirts of the late grandfather.

Placed on a woven rug, the rocking horse not only complemented the room’s aesthetic but also added an emotional dimension. It was the meeting point between past and present, between the father’s memory and the new life just beginning.

More than decoration: a family legacy

When the client saw the finished rocking horse, the emotion was evident. He told us that upon touching the wood and seeing the familiar shape, he felt he had recovered a piece of his childhood. But more importantly, he felt he was passing on a legacy to his son.

Projects like this remind us that interior design can be profoundly human. It’s not just about creating beautiful spaces, but about giving form to the stories that define us.

Sustainable design from an emotional perspective

At Willow, we understand sustainability as a holistic concept. It’s not only about using eco-friendly materials or reducing environmental impact, but also about creating objects with emotional value—items that won’t be easily discarded and that can be passed down from generation to generation.

The wooden rocking horse fulfills all of these principles:

  • Responsible materials: local wood, natural varnishes, artisanal production.
  • Durability: designed to withstand daily use and the passage of time.
  • Emotional value: a replica full of history and meaning.
  • Timeless design: free from fleeting trends, built to last.

Costa Rica as inspiration

This project also reflects the spirit of Costa Rica, a country where nature, family, and tradition hold a central place. Designing in this context allows us to integrate values such as respect for the environment, community connection, and the celebration of authenticity.

The wooden rocking horse is, in many ways, a symbol of that philosophy: simple, natural, made by Costa Rican hands, and full of meaning.

Conclusion

The story of the wooden rocking horse is an example of how interior design can go beyond the visual. At Willow, we feel honored to have been part of this project, which allowed us to unite design, memory, and sustainability in a single piece.

Every object has the potential to tell a story. And when that story is designed with care, respect, and purpose, the result is much more than decoration—it’s a legacy to live and share.
